| Description | As a youth Buchan was sent to Edinburgh University to study divinity, but he soon gave it up in favour of medicine. He began practice in Yorkshire where he was appointed to a foundling hospital, with the support of parliament. He returned to Edinburgh in about 1766 where he practised as a physician for many years. Buchan started lecturing on natural philosophy at Edinburgh University and in 1769 he published 'Domestic Medicine; or the Family Physician', which was the first work of its kind in this country. It became a very popular work and at least eighty thousand copies were sold in Britain alone. |
