| Description | As a youth Buchan was sent to Edinburgh University to study divinity, but he soon gave it up in favour of medicine. He began practice in Yorkshire where he was appointed to a foundling hospital, with the support of parliament. Buchan wrote his MD dissertation for Edinburgh University 'On the preservation of infant life' (1761). He returned to Edinburgh in about 1766 where he practised as a physician for many years. Buchan started lecturing on natural philosophy at Edinburgh University and in 1769 he published 'Domestic Medicine; or the Family Physician', which was the first work of its kind in this country. It became a very popular work and at least eighty thousand copies were sold in Britain alone. |
