| Description | Busick Harwood started as an apprentice to an apothecary and then qualified as a surgeon, travelling to India to work. Bad health caused him to have to return to England, graduating Doctor of Medicine from Cambridge University in 1790 and having been elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1784. In 1785 Harwood was elected professor of anatomy at Cambridge University and two years later he was appointed Downing professor of medicine. In 1806 he was knighted. Harwood became renowned for his experiments on transfusion of blood. He was a patron of the artist Sylvester Harding. |
