| Title | A Woody Lane, with a thatched Cottage and a Pool |
| Date | 1659 |
| Period | 17th century ; 1650s |
| Description | A calm landscape spreads out before the eye of the viewer, persuading him or her for a walk into the woods, following the lane that goes into space. In the left corner a hut is placed at the end of the lane, supposedly a shed for crops. The haystack placed next to it and the barn on the other side of the road show that this is a scene of the calm solitude of rural life. The three figures visible are relaxed, chatting and taking a stroll, and the whole scene is lit by a warm summer sun. The pool on the right foreground adds to the calm of the scene. Hobbema gives much attention to details, which is seen very well in the technique in which he painted the large tree in the foreground. This painting shows a woody landscape, with the remarkable light pencilling of the foliage for which the artist was celebrated; an oak, worthy of Ruisdael, in the centre, and a rich mellow tint over the whole. |
