Description This work is a memorial commemorating over 1,000 staff, students and alumni that fought in the First and Second World Wars. The original memorial was unveiled on the 9th February 1923, with an extension made in 1952 to include the names of the Soldier’s who died in the Second World War. Below the inscribed names is a quote by Rudyard Kipling, taken from a speech he made when he visited the University in 1920 - ' they turned without fear or question from these gates of learning to those of the grave in order that men might continue to learn freedom'. The crest of the University, Navy, R.A.F, RAMC and the Army are engraved into the stone above the memorial. In a niche above them is a bronze sculpture of St George at Kelso symbolising the concept of Good overcoming Evil.

Signature Underneath the plaque of names from WW1' TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE ALUMNI OF THIS UNIVERSITY WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR' This is flanked by the dates of the war in Roman Numerals. Underneath the crests, engraved in Latin is 'VIVERE NOS DOCEANT QVI DIDICERE MORT. Flanking the WW2 extension are the dates of the war . Kiplings' quote is underneath the WW2 extension on the ground.
