| Description | John Jebb was a student at Peterhouse, Cambridge University where he obtained his Batchelor of Arts degree in 1757 and his Master of Arts three years later. In 1768 he began lecturing on the Greek Testament and held church positions in Suffolk until 1775. Jebb joined in with efforts to scrap clerical and university subscription in 1771. Having turned to medicine as a profession he graduated as Doctor of Medicine in 1776, studying at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London. He obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from St Andrew's University a year later. He went on to practise medicine in London with much success. The following advertisement appeared in one of the daily papers, 30 May, 1786: "The subscribers to the Print of the late Dr. John Jebb are respectfully informed that the plate is now finished, and those members of the Constitutional Society, and the public, who have not subscribed, and are desirous of procuring proof impressions, are requested to makeapplication, on or before the 3rd of June, after which, as the number printed off will be limited to the names that are received, none can be purchased. Likeness is undoubtedly the grand and chief requisite of a portrait, and Mr. Hoppner has delineated the Character of Dr. Jebb, with that uncommon spirit and truth, so peculiar to all his productions." |
