| Description | Probably proof before letters. As a youth, Johnson was apprenticed to a surgeon-apothecary in Ireland, eventually moving to Ireland to complete his medical education. Having earned his surgeon's qualification in 1800 his first post was to be appointed surgeon's mate in the navy. During the great war Johnson was posted to several naval hospitals around the world. In 1808 Johnson served on the Valiant, where he remained for the next five years, and saw much active service. He attended the Duke of Clarence when he was sick with fever and was created physician-extraordinary in 1830, on his accession to the throne as William IV. |
