DescriptionThis instrument has a soundboard of spruce; back, sides, head and scroll of maple; pegs, fingerboard, tail-gut protector of ebony; tailpiece and endpin holder of rosewood. The soundboard is wide grained. Dyed pear/poplar/dyed pear purfling. Ribs have a medium depth figure, the 2 piece back also has a medium depth figure, the figure going towards the bottom in the centre and up at the edges. Plugged holes at the top and bottom of the back. Instrument is covered in an orange varnish, possibly with a stain originally applied to the soundboard giving a reversed grain effect. One piece pegbox/scroll and neck. Measurements: Neck 285mm long; fingerboard 605mm long, 32.9mm wide at the nut, 65.1mm wide at the bottom. Soundboard arch 31mm; Back arch 31mm. Inscription: Labelled "Baritone Violin / CARLEEN HUTCHINS / SUS No. 164 / Montclair, N.J. 1973 / C-G-D-A". The 'Baritone Violin', '164', '73' (of the date), and teh 'C-G-D-A' are all handwritten, the rest printed. The label also has a CMH monogram. A smaller label "Louis M. Dunham / Maplewood". A CMH monogram is stamped on the wood on the back inside."C-G-D-A" has been inked on the back inside. "Carleen. M. / Hutchins / 1973" handwritten on the back inside at the treble upper bout. "164" handwritten in pencil on the bottom side of the bridge, "C G D A" written on the neck side of the bridge. Playing accessories: 4 fine tuners, tail-pin, wolf suppressor.
