DescriptionTechnical description: Brass, straight, 1 valve. The bore profile closer to that of a flügelhorn than to that of a trumpet. Ligature tuning at mouthpipe shank and liagture joint between valve and bell sections; the tenon of this joint has a short stocking. Bell bore profile without wide flare (i.e. like a sackbut). Valve type: 1 Berlin valve, bottom sprung; alignment by key on piston. Inscribed on bell: monogram "A S PARIS" / "SEUL / GRAND PRIX / 1867 / SAX & CIE / Facteur Breveté / 39.Rue De DunKerque / A PARIS / N41206" (the serial number had originally been stamped 40206, and the first zero has been overstamped "1"). Overall size: 1205; bell 82. Sounding length: minimum 1198; length of tuning shank 106. Bore: tuning shank (mouthpipe) at c 10mm from mouthpice receiver (minimum bore) 9.9; tuning shank (distal end) 9.9; v.t.s. bore (1) 9.9; proximalend of bell pipe at c 160mm from mouthpiece receiver, insert bore 11.0; 599mm from bell end, c 16.4; c 356mm from bell end, 23.2. B = 0.53. Dia of mouthpiece reeiver: m.r.t. 10.6 - 9.9. Decorative features: A decoratice cupped end-piece (approximately a truncated portion of sphere of radius 100mm, rim diameter 190mm) is attached 84mm from bell end; this would seem to have no acoustic function but to be for visual effect in theatre use. Possibly previously used with mouthpiece for trumpet (3345). |
