DescriptionTechnical description: 1st, 2nd and 3rd valves compensating with respect to 4th; stands in F, 4th valve gives B♭. Metal construction: brass with chromium-plated touchpieces and white metal linkages; seamed tubing and bell branch segment, apart from spun bell segment, depth 150. Valve type: 4 rotary valves. Overall size: 620; corpus diameter 315; bell diameter 313. Sounding length: segment lengths: mouthpipe 470; intermediate segment 688; bell segment 895. Bore: m.t.s. 11.6; v.t.s. (4: 3, 2, 1) 11.7. Bell flare:- Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 8.4 at end. Inscribed on bell "JOHN GREY / & / SONS / LONDON"; on back of bell near stay "MADE IN ITALY"; rather crudely incised on mouthpipe ferrule and beneath main inscription on bell "XKXV"; on underside of 1st touchpiece "58", and on underside of 2nd, 3rd and 4th touchpieces "97". Decorative features: Foliage pattern around main inscription on bell. Actual maker probably Orsi. With fitted wooden case, black artificial leather covered. Usable pitch: With main tuning slide pushed right in, plays at A4 = 440 Hz. Performance characteristics: Free blowing; badly positioned thumb valve lever. Given with mouthpieces (3611), (3612) and (3613) and formerly used with at least one of these. |
