Maker Biography

Halari or Halary was a French firm that primarily produced wind instruments. The firm was founded in 1768 by Jean-Hilaire Aste, who upon travelling to Paris in 1796 adopted the name Halary. His successor, Jean-Louis Antoine, adopted the spelling ‘Halari’ in 1840. The firm had a considerable reputation for their experimentation with and innovation of brass instruments. They patented three unique instruments, the clavitube – a seven keyed bugle, the quinticlave – a nine or ten keyed alto bugle, and the ophicleide.

Sounding length: with slide in and keys closed, 1205.
Bore: minimum 11.0; 603mm from bell end, c 22.8; c 387mm from bell end, 32.2.
Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 12.0 11.3.

Technical description: Brass. 7 keys. Rack and pinion tuning at mouthpipe. No garland, wired bell rim.

Keyhead type: flat round.

Inscribed on bell rim "HALARI FACTEUR DE LA MAISON DU ROI BREVETE D'INVENTION ET LA PERFECTIONNEMENT RUE MAZARINE A PARIS", with small stamped crest.

With fitted, leather lined wooden box.

Usable pitch: Plays at A4 = 440 Hz with mouthpiece (1285), c 30 cents above A4 = 440 Hz with mouthpiece (1284), c 30 cents below A4 = 440 Hz with mouthpiece (908). Rack and pinion lowers pitch by c 30 cents.

Purchased by lender with, probably formerly used with and possibly supplied by manufacturer with mouthpieces (908), (1284) and (1285); also purchased by lender with mouthpiece (1286), but this latter does not fit this instrument.
