The instrument was the gift of Lyndesay Langwill who had bought it from Stuart Arthur, an Edinburgh theatre musician, in c1932. Langwill played it until his death in 1983. Langwill was an Edinburgh accountant and amateur bassoonist who spent 25 years compiling an (the only!) encyclopaedic Index of Musical Wind-Instrument Makers first published in 1960.
Buffet was a workshop established between 1939-44 by Jean Louis Buffet. In order to distinguish himself from his Uncle’s rival company, Buffet Jeune, the firm was renamed Buffet-Crampon.

Technical description: Palisander with german silver ferrules, crook well lining, bell rim mount, keywork and crook. Standard French Buffet key system with extra F♯/G♯ trill key for R0.

Signature / Marks: Stamped on all joints with lyre / and in cartouche, "BUFFET / Crampon & Cie / A PARIS" / and monogram BC; also on butt "R782/6591". D key guard incorporates "BC" motif.
