This wooden trumpet is played alongside animal horns, bells, and drums during mure dancing, a dance of celebration or mourning of the Madi people. These dances mark victory in war, the birth or death of a king, or the loss of a battle. Turi are also played by warriors to encourage themselves or to threaten the enemies to surrender during times of war.Played in large sets in ‘hocket’ style in circle dances for important celebrations. Played by men and youths only.
