DescriptionTechnical description: Rosewood; 4 sections; brass key; no additional ferrules but there are pronounced swellings at the sockets (and see repair history below); [replacement] turned dark wood (or horn) cap slots into top of head; socket at top of upper body, tenon on head; long tenons; bottom of upper body tenon is rounded and very smooth; small circular embouchure-hole. Keymount type: ring; SATK., Keyhead type: flat square. Stamped "STANESBY / IUNIOR" on all sections; on the head the stamp is out-of-line with the embouchure-hole, possibly so that it becomes in-line when the head is put in playing position. Repair History: The cap is probably a replacement; key may be a replacement; a black wood or horn band has been added to the foot socket to inhibit the crack and to strengthen the socket; there is twine wrapped round the top of the head where a ferrule may have been (the grain of the wood is continuous from below the twine to the section above it, and the bore is continuous inside); the flute has been relapped and returned to playing condition. |
