DescriptionTechnical description: Boxwood; 4 sections; brass key; 4 ivory ferrules; slightly oval embouchure-hole. Keymount type: ring. Keyhead type: flat square, notched and chamfered. Overall size: 467 mm Sounding length: embouchure to foot, 409 mm Bore: conical Stamped with tudor rose and "C. GEROCK / LONDON". Performance characteristics: Range D⁴ - A⁶ (sounding G⁴ - D⁷). D⁴, E⁴, E⁵ and E⁶ (sounding G⁴, A⁴, A⁵, A⁶) very flat. Speaks well throughout range but intonation uneven (cork not readily movable). Usable pitch: Sounding A⁴ c 450 Hz. General usage of type: This appears to be a late version of the "little quartflöte" mentioned by Quantz (1752/1985, p.34). Christopher Addington suggested that these were `probably played mostly in France, as descant members of the three-piece flute consort' (Addington 1984, p.43). |
