DescriptionTechnical description: Brass, three-part ball with groove. Twin clock spring drum slide return; notch on upper touchpiece. The slide can lower the pitch by up to two semitones. Pitch recorded as A=450 when played by Madeuf. Crooks in F, E, E-flat with tuning bit, E-flat with tuning bit (slightly lower in pitch), D with tuning bit (slightly lower in pitch) and C with tuning bit (slightly lower in pitch) Overall size: 596; bell 109. Sounding length: without shanks or crooks, minimum 1718; with D crook, minimum 2064; overall air column lengths of bit 36; E crook 160; Eb crook 242; D crook 365; C crook 655. Bore: minimum (mouthpipe), 10.5; at 1932mm from bell end, c 10.5; at 859mm from bell end, c 11.2; main slides 11.2; at c 240mm from bell end, 14.85; at c 223mm from bell end, 15.8; at 15.6mm from bell end, 69.3. B = 0.75 (in F); B = 0.80 (in D). Bell cutoff = 1300 Hz. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: taper on instrument body to receive crooks, bits or mouthpiece 11.5 - 10.9. Inscribed around top of garland "T. HARPER'S IMPROVED MANUFACTURED BY I. KÖHLER". Inscribed on clock spring facing plate "165". Inscribed on shield in centre of garland "Henrietta St / Covent Garden / London". Barley twist embellishment on mouthpipe proximal, mouthpipe distal and middle yard distal ferrules; elaborate garland with repoussé foliage motifs; engraved ball. Usable pitch: Plays c 60-80 cents above A⁴ = 440 Hz with mouthpiece (2978) and without tuning bit; bit lowers pitch by c 20 cents.
