DescriptionTechnical description: Brass; windway through valves (3,2,1); with crook for A♭ only. Valve type: 3 Stölzel valves with spring inside hollow stem; alignment by guide pin which also locates lower end of spring; wax partitions. Repair History: 1st and 2nd valve touchpieces are of german silver, 3rd valve touchpiece is of ivory - probably 1st and 2nd are replacements. The crook is probably a replacement: the original could be expected to have had a minimum bore of c11.1. Maker: by Thomas Glen. Edinburgh. 1837 65, probably c 1840. The actual maker was possibly Guichard, or other French firm; Glen imported many French cornets at this time (Myers 1985). Overall size: 268; bell 124. Sounding length: minimum 1268; crook overall air column length 260. Bore: crook at c 35mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 9.1; crook at distal end, 10.0; instrument body at c 25mm from shank/crook receiver (local minimum bore) 11.1; valve piston inside diameter 11.5 (m.t.s. and v.t.s. stuck); 634mm from bell end, c 12.0; c 276mm from bell end, 17.0. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: crook m.r.t. 9.7 9.2, external taper 10.7 11.4; shank/crook receiver taper 11.8 11.3. Valve type: 3 Stölzel valves with spring inside hollow stem; alignment by guide pin which also locates lower end of spring; wax partitions. Stamped on bell within ellipse "T. GLEN / 2 & 3 No. BANK ST. / EDINBURGH"; inscribed on rectangular silver plate on crook "LAB". Crack in main tubing. Bb and A shanks and possible crooks for G etc missing. 1st and 2nd valve touchpieces are of german silver, 3rd valve touchpiece is of ivory probably 1st and 2nd are replacements.
