DescriptionThis instrument has a soundboard of spruce; back, ribs, neck and scroll of sycamore; fingerboard of stained pear(?); endbutton of ebony; pegs black stained fruitwood with ivory dots; nut of ivory. The tailpiece was attached violin-method with an ivory tail-gut protector let into the soundboard. Inked lines to imitate purfling and C-holes. Plugged hole in the soundboard for where it was attached to the lower block. Stiffening supports on back in the soundpost region and at the fold; the corners are stiffened inside. Brown varnish; fine figure on the one piece back, rising from right to left. Violin type scroll. Cut marks for frets, unevenly spaced. Measurements: Neck 272mm long; fingerboard 398mm long, 49mm wide at nut, 64mm wide at bottom, hollowed out underneath along its length in the centre. Inscription: Handwritten label inside "Fred : D : ...[illegible] / Fecit / London, Ryders court / Leicester fields 1734", the 734 difficult to read and may be wrong.
