DescriptionTechnical description: Very heavy; brass with German silver fixed mouthpipe, garland, stays etc. Single-seamed bell, garland width 43mm. Looped tuning-slide (for E ?). Loops in 1st and 3rd valve tubes. Lacks rest of tuning-slide crooks [for F, Eb and possibly for D]. Sounding length: Mouthpipe protective german silver sleeve extends 166mm from mouthpiece receiver face. This instrument is notable for its fine workmanship, the main tube consisting of only two long segments: proximal segment from distal end of mouthpipe sleeve to proximal end of first valve segment ferrule 973mm; bell segment from distal end of tuning-slide ferrule 1349mm. Valve type: 3 rotary valves. Corks on fixed valve cap; clocksprings in drums. Valve touch / spring assembly mounted on plate fixed to and projecting from tube. Usable pitch: Plays in E at 60 cents above A4 = 440 Hz with tuning-slide in. Slide pulls to allow use at A4 = 440 Hz. Performance characteristics: Free-blowing and resonant, full tone; good valve action. |
