DescriptionTechnical description: Cherry wood; 2 finger-holes, 1 thumb-hole; finger-holes offset to right. Copy of instrumnet stamped "E:LEGROS" recovered from the 1545 wreck of the 'Mary Rose' (81A3901). Stamped "CF". Repair History: Lower finger-hole has been filled in on upper edge. Performance characteristics: Plays major scale (tone, tone, semitone tuning); length of instrument makes it difficult to hold and play. Usable pitch: If lowest note is G, sounding A⁴ = c 474 Hz (c 135 cents above A⁴ = 440 Hz); if lowest note is A, sounding A⁴ = c 424 Hz (c 65 cents below A⁴ = 440 Hz). |
