DescriptionOverall size: Corpus diameter 330; bell diameter 285. Sounding length: mouthpipe length 380; segment lengths, from distal end of ferrule after tuning slide 549; bell segment 937. Bore: m.t.s. 10.9 11.3; v.t.s. 11.3. Bell wall angle at D=100mm, 27.8. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. of crook 8.5 at end; crook receiver taper on body 12.7 12.1. Technical description: Orchestral valve horn of elegant design and excellent state of preservation. Windway runs: crook receiver m.t.s. 1 2 bell. Valves mounted on extension of the distal tuning slide branch, replaceable by a simple tube (not present) to give a hand horn. The pattern is that of M.A. Raoux's horns of 30 40 years earlier. Metal construction: yellow brass; seamed gusseted bell, garland width 30.5; all other tubing seamed. With French pattern F crook, seamed, possibly original. Valve type: Long stem Périnet with short tuning slides, probably in tune with A crook when fully pushed in, but extensible for F. Inscribed on bell opposite stay "J.C. LABBAYE / FACTEUR DES THEATRES NATIONAUX / A PARIS" surmounted by medallion with "INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION LONDON 1862" around periphery and "1862 / LONDINI HONORIS / CAUSA" within. ... M.A. Raoux poinçon below inscription. Inscribed on bell garland "RAOUX, FOURNISSEUR DU CONSERVATOIRE, RUE DES MINIMES NO. 14, PARIS". Crook possibly not original. General usage of type: Two valve Périnet valve horns were in makers' catalogues until the beginning of the 20th century; players familiar with hand technique could easily supply the `missing' notes of the chromatic scale. Usable pitch: Approximately 100 cents sharp on A4 = 440 Hz with associated F crook. Performance characteristics: Valves are free blowing. Purchased with mouthpiece (636).
