DescriptionTechnical description: Horn of Raoux pattern with three Périnet valves mounted on distal branch of tuning-slide. Although of late manufacture, this has the design of a mid- 19th century high-pitch instrument with tuning-slide elongated to bring pitch to A₄ 440 Hz. Long stem valves and valve slides for use with F crooks and longer, rather than higher pitched crooks. Metal construction: silver-plated brass with seamed gusseted bell segment; bell garland, width 22mm. Reinforcing strip on outside of bell curve. With crooks for A, F, E♭, B♭ basso, coupler giving semitone on F and Eb crooks to give E and D. Only the E♭ crook may be original. The A and B♭ crook are older French crooks. Valve type: Long-stem Périnet valves. Repair History: many patches. Serial number: 124515 Instrument; 95685 (valves). According to the firm's archives [instruments books], the instrument was model A41, made by Bloomfield in a batch of six. Overall size: Corpus diameter 330; bell diameter 282. Sounding length: mouthpipe length 430; segment lengths, from distal end of ferrule after valves 550; bell segment 946. Bore: m.t.s. 11.0; v.t.s. (1,2,3) 11.0. Bell flare:- Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. of crook 8.2 at end. Inscribed on bell: monogram "B & Co" / "Sotone / (REGISTERED)". Inscribed on bell garland "Boosey & Co Ltd", trumpet and banner trademark, "Makers London / 124515". Inscribed on 2nd valve casing: trumpet and banner trademark / "95685". Inscribed on valve housings and bottom caps "55", "56", "57". General usage of type: Orchestral and band use. Usable pitch: Playable at A4 = 440 Hz, crooked in F, E, Eb, D and Bb basso. The A crook is 60 cents flat with the tuning slide present. Performance characteristics: Typical of French model horns. Freely blowing except for low notes.
