DescriptionTechnical description: The tubing of gilding metal or red brass with silver ferrules, stay mounts and ball. Three-part ball with groove. Helical slide return spring in central sliding tube. Repair History: Stay unsoldered on the two larger crooks; key of case missing. The curved bit, of yellow brass, probably a replacement or later addition. Small strip patched repair of bell tube adjacent to ball. Overall size: 615; bell 123. Souding length: instrument without shanks or crooks, 1723; overall air column lengths of curved bit 50; straight bit 53: E crook 162; E♭ crook 237 D crook 400; D♭ crook 518. Bore: at c 40mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore), 11.0; at 862mm from bell end, c 11.4; main slide, 11.4 11.5; at c 247mm from bell end, 16.1; at 21.6mm from bell end, 68.3. B = 0.75 (in F); B = 0.78 (in D). Bell cutoff = 1300 Hz. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: taper on instrument body to receive crooks, bits or mouthpiece 12.9 - 12.4. Performance characteristics: E and D♭ crooks together give C; slide allows lowering of pitch by 2 semitones. The input impedance and harmonicity of the air-column resonances are reported in Myers and Campbell 2006. Usable pitch: Plays 25 cents above A⁴ 440 Hz with mouthpiece (3216) and curved bit. Inscribed on upper side of bell "1ST / CLASS / EXHIBITION / 1862 / PRIZE MEDAL / AWARDED / TO" / lion & unicorn crest / "J.HIGHAM / MAKER / VICTORIA / BRIDGE /MANCHESTER / 4709". Decorative features: Engraved ball, stay mounts and ferrules. Playing accessories: 2 bits (one curved). 4 crooks for E, Eb, D, Db. With fitted wooden case, probably original.
