DescriptionTechnical description: Silver-plated brass. With bell lock and screwed slide lock at joint; slide buffers without springs. Cork-covered handle. With alternative v.t.s. for C. Valve type: String-action rotary valve. According to the firm's archives [instruments books], the instrument was model B4053, made in a batch of three. Overall size: 1387; bell 202. Sounding length: The C v.t.s. air column 569mm longer than the D v.t.s. Bore: at c 40mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore), 12.2; descending slide, 13.3; ascending slide, 13.3; v.t.s. bore, 14.0; m.t.s. bore, 16.6 - 19.4. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 13.1 - 12.4. Inscribed on upper side of bell "Imperial / MADE BY / Boosey & Hawkes Ltd. / London."; on underside of bell near stay "L.P. / 179070 / MADE IN ENGLAND"; on main slide inner and outer sections near joint "070"; on top of valve housing "37". Usable pitch: A⁴ = 440 Hz. Playing accessories: With balance weight. With black fitted case. Purchased by lender with, probably formerly used with and possibly supplied by manufacturer with mouthpiece (3256). Specific usage history: Made to the order of previous owner and used by him in the London Symphony Orchestra (1951-58), the B.B.C. Concert Orchestra (1958-59) and the B.B.C. Symphony Orchestra (1959-64). |
