DescriptionTechnical description: Blackwood with german silver ferrules and keywork. Five pieces: mouthpiece, barrel, upper section, lower section, bell. `Crystal' mouthpiece with a long table; barrel long and slightly bulbous. Upper section: speaker liner on front of the instrument, chimney; brown ebonite rollers for cross L3 key; extra side trill key for throat A-B♭ and B♭-C♮. Lower section: wide thumb rest; brown ebonite rollers on L4 and R3, and R4 keys. L0: T; speaker. L1: T; throat A♮. L2: T; throat A♭. L3: T; cross E♭₄/B♭₅. L4: cross C♯₄/G♯₅; E₃/B♮₄; F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T; side F₄/C₆; two side trill keys for throat A-B♮, A-B♭ and B♭-C, B♭-B♮. R2: T + spectacle. R3: T + spectacle (forked B♭₃/F♮₅); cross B♭₃/F♮₅. R4: G♯₃/E♭₅; F₃/C₅. Keymount type: pillars. Keyhead type: modern. Stamped on barrel "3246"; on upper section star / (chimney) "EXCELSIOR / SONOROUS / CLASS / HAWKES & SON / DENMAN STREET / PICCADILLY CIRCUS / LONDON / 3246" / star; on lower section "HAWKES & SON / LONDON 3246" and on back " X 2"; on bell star / "EXCELSIOR / SONOROUS / CLASS / HAWKES & SON / DENMAN STREET / PICCADILLY CIRCUS / LONDON / 3808 / star / DCA". Long crack in barrel. Pads missing. Springs fatigue. Keys corroded. Repair History: Mouthpiece and bell probably replacements. |
