MakerComposite: Rudall Carte & Co. / Louis Lot. |
Date Made1886 (body); 1855 - early 20th century (head). |
DescriptionTechnical description: Cocus head; ebonite body and foot; 3 sections; silver keys; 4 silver ferrules; oval embouchure-hole; large finger-holes; no tuning-slide; screw-stopper; metal-lined sockets and tenons; cork-lapped tenons; short lower tenon; modern-style foot mechanism arrangement. Of the full, final Rockstro system (1877) this flute lacks: (i) Lever by which upper C♮ hole may be partially closed by L2, and (ii) Small vent-hole connected with upper C♯ - but see repair history below. Otherwise this is the 1877 Rockstro system, and has the 1877 addition of a large hole connected to the D trill. It cannot therefore be classed as an earlier model. The 1873 addition of a lever for L1 to produce B♮ with L0 removed is on this instrument operated by R1. The `Rockstro Model' was manufactured by Rudall Carte & Co well into the 20th century (Rockstro 1890, paragraph 681; Toff 1979, p.112). L0: @I{PL - B; Br B♭. L1: @I{PL - C. L2: @I{A. L3: @I{G♯. L4: @I{G. R1: @I{F; D♯ trill; dup B ; B♭ trill. R2: @I{E; D trill (opening upper D hole and large dup upper C♯ hole). R3: @I{D; Rockstro F♯. R4: @I{D♯; low C♯; low C roller. Keymount type: rod/pillar; needle springs except for L0 keys (leaf). Keyhead type: cylinder cup; covers for finger-holes were originally perforated (the pads still are) but have been filled; pads for non-perforated cups have central screws. Repair History: A hole appears to have been filled above the upper C♯ hole. This may originally have been a vent hole. |
