DescriptionTechnical description: Short valve model. Brass. Bell with garland. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, short pistons. Signature marks: Inscribed on bell "SUPERIOR / CLASS / HAWKES & SON / Denman Street / Piccadilly Circus / LONDON", and on back of bell near rim "18020". Inscribed on valves "4", "5 / HAWKES & SON / LONDON / 4", "6". Inscribed on crook "F" on plate, and "...N LONDON". Repair History: The crook appears to have been shortened at some time. Tear in crook soldered, J. and R. Glen, 1973. Repaired by P. Barton, 1986. Serial number: 18020. Overall size: perpendicular to bell 440; corpus diameter 320; bell diameter 272. Sounding length: segment lengths: from distal end of ferrule after tuning slide 377; bell segment 934. Bore: mouthpipe 8.1; v.t.s. (3,2,1) 11.5; m.t.s. 11.7 - 12.1. Bell flare:- Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. of crook 8.9 8.1; crook receiver taper on body 12.9 - 12.0. Usable pitch: Plays at very high pitch with own crook. Plays 20 cents above A4 = 440 Hz with crook (3140) and tuning slide pulled out 40mm. Performance characteristics: Plays better with crook (3140) than with own crook.
