DescriptionTechnical description: Boxwood with horn ferrules and brass keywork. Five pieces: mouthpiece, barrel, upper section, lower section, bell. Ferrules half-round on bell and lower section, tapered with rim on barrel. Mouthpiece of darker wood, with short table and grooved for cord. Barrel long (64.5mm), fusiform. Upper section: throat A♭ in brass saddle, perhaps later addition, the less good recessed wood to fit the key supports this supposition; speaker straight, liner projects into bore; tone-holes of speaker and F♯₃/C♯₅ keys lined with brass. Lower section: lever for F♯₃/C♯₅ seems to be bent; tone-hole for F₃/C₅ in block; no thumb rest.Bell widely flared, with integral wood rim. L0: T; straight speaker. L1: T; straight throat A♮; short side throat A♭. L2: T. L3: T. L4: cross C♯₄/G♯₅; E₃/B♮₄; F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T. R2: T. R3: T. R4: T; G♯₃/E♭₅. Keyhead type: E₃/B♮₄ and G♯₃/E♭₅ keys have flat round heads rivetted to shank; others similar but integral. Keymount type: blocks except for A♭ key which has a brass saddle with screw; leaf springs; touches of B♮ and C♯ keys are shaped so as to clear the prominent ferrule. Stamped with flower / "PIERING / GRAZ / B" on all parts except mouthpiece. Crack in bell extending 73mm; liner of speaker misplaced and jamming key; mouthpiece and barrel seized to upper section; mouthpiece shows considerable wear. A♭ key, of a different shape to the others and mounted in a neat saddle, may be later addition; Block for cross C♯₄/G♯₅ broken out and replaced; replacement broken and neatly repaired by capping with brass; a crack in the bell rim has been repaired leaving a triangular distorted uncoloured patch where the wood has been made flush with the rest of the rim. Usable pitch: A₄ = c 466 Hz. Previous ownership: Purchased by H.I. Brackenbury in Vienna, June 1928, for £0/6/0. Current ownership: Government allocation to the University, 1991. (C.H. Brackenbury Memorial Collection). |
