DescriptionBrass shell with rolled edge at each end, relieved on the snare (lower) end at two points where snares are fitted under the counter-hoop. Rope tension; ten buffs. Wooden counter-hoops of lapped nailed construction; 6 gut snares held between head and counter-hoop; calf heads. 15-inch heads. Decoration: hoops painted black, with yellow wavy line. Repair History: The brass shell has two shield-shaped patches attached, one at each end of the shell with the points of the shapes aligned with the edge of the counter-hoops. An old snare head, possibly the original, has been fitted to the top as the batter head. At either side of the sound-hole and adjacent to the rim there are two circular marks of diameter 43mm, each appears to have a central pin-hole. The replacement snare head appears to be more recent. |
Other InformationSpecific usage history: Although raised in Edinburgh, the 25th Regiment was known in 1796 as `The Sussex Regiment', only regaining Scottish identity in 1887 when it amalgamated with the 3rd Battalion the Scottish Borderers Militia to become the King's Own Scottish Borderers. |
