DescriptionTechnical description: Brass. Two main tuning-slides. Leadpipe enters 3rd valve casing at the front; 3rd valve loop leaves from left and returns to front; bellpipe exits 1st valve casing at the left. No water-key. With shank for A only. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, top-sprung with spring outside valve stem; alignment by key on piston. Repair History: The shank for A is a replacement. Maker: by J.H. Ebblewhite. London. 1854 82. Almost certainly imported rather than made by Ebblewhite; probably Gautrot. Overall size: 322; bell 126. Sounding length: Shank overall length 160. Bore: shank at c 5mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 9.9; shank at distal end, 10.0; instrument body at c 60mm from shank/crook receiver (local minimum bore) 10.1 (some denting); first m.t.s. at c 212mm from shank/crook receiver, tuning slide bores 11.4 11.7; second tuning slide 11.7; v.t.s. (3,2,1) 11.7. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: shank m.r.t. 9.9 (not tapered); shank external taper 10.8 11.8 (poor match for instrument); shank/crook receiver taper 11.7 11.0. Inscribed on bell "TC / J.H. Ebblewhite / Maker and Importer / 24 High St. Aldgate, London, E.". Playing accessories: Screw in music card holder. Stay unsoldered between mouthpipe and 2nd valve casing. shank for Bb and possible crooks missing. Music card holder spring broken. The shank for A is a replacement. Usable pitch: Plays at Old Philharmonic pitch, but with a shank for Bb the tuning slide flattens by over 100 cents, so Diapason Normal possible. Previous ownership: ex P.A.T. Bate collection. |
