Elastic or helical spring slide return; no notch on touchpiece. Overall size: 575; bell 110. Sounding length: instrument without crooks, minimum 1691; with long bit in F, minimum 1727; crooked in D, minimum 2060; overall air column lengths of short bit 31.7; curved bit 42; long bit 52.4; E crook 145; Eb crook 249; D crook 388; C crook 644. Bore: long bit for F, minimum bore at distal end, 9.5; crook for D, minimum 10.5; at 1030mm from bell end, c 10.85; at 864mm from bell end, c 10.85; main slide bore 11.05; at c 236mm from bell end, 15.3; at 16.0mm from bell end, 68.1. B = 0.71 (in F); B = 0.82 (in D). Bell cutoff = 1400 Hz. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: taper on instrument body to receive crooks, bits or mouthpiece 11.4 - 10.7. Inscribed "HARPER'S IMPROVED / 149 / KOHLER & SON / Sole Makers / 35 Henrietta St Covent Garden London". Decorative features: Engraved ball, barley twist embellishment on mouthpipe proximal, mouthpipe distal and middle yard distal ferrules. Playing accessories: 3 bits (one curved). 4 crooks for E, Eb, D, C. Fitted wooden case, probably original. Spring or elastic not present. Performance characteristics: Free blowing. The input impedance and harmonicity of the air-column resonances are reported in Myers and Campbell 2006. Usable pitch: Plays c 0 cents above A⁴ 440 Hz with mouthpiece (2978) and without bit; curved bit lowers pitch by c 20 cents.
