Description
Technical description:
This Argentinean charango is a small, 10-string Andean musical instrument from the Lute family. The back is constructed using an armadillo shell. Soundboard of plywood. The sound-hole is 44.8mm in diameter. A small coloured decorative band encirecles the sound-hole. Bridge is 119.4mm. The fingerboard and headstock are constructed of a different, darker wood to that used on the soundboard. Five courses of nylon strings, probably replacing the originals. Machine tuners comprised of celluloid. The reverse of the neck bears a label which reads 'INDUSTRIA ARGENTINA'. There is evidence of woodworm on the neck; this likely predates the construction of the instrument as the galleries are both visible and display signs of having been varnished. Neck is 46.3mm wide at the nut. There are 12 frets located on the fingerboard. These are not consistently spaced but are plotted at irregular intervals, with some being larger than those that preceded them. The fingerboard is 167mm in length.
It likely dates from the 1970s and was acquired by the donor in 1979. |
