Description | Robert James was educated at St John's College, Oxford University, where he obtained his Batchelor of Arts degree in 1726. He then went on to study medicine and in 1728 was created a Doctor of Medicine by royal mandate. He eventually opened several practices in London. In 1745 he was admitted a licentiate of the College of Physicians. James was a friend of Dr Johnson, who contributed to his book 'A Medical Dictionary, with a History of Drugs', published in 1743. He published several other works on subjects such as gout, and fevers. James asserted that he had invented a powder that would cure both ailments, and for which he took out a patent. He was apparently also an "assiduous womanizer" (ODNB) |
