Description | William Baylies obtained the degree of Doctor of Medicine from Aberdeen University in 1748 and in 1757 he became a fellow of the Edinburgh College of Physicians. For many years he practised medicine at Bath and in 1757 he published a work entitled 'Use and Abuse of Bath Waters'. He became embroiled in an argument over the work with other doctors in the area, and this severely damaged his reputation. In 1764 Baylies was appointed physician to the Middlesex Hospital, and a year later licentiate of the College of Physicians in London. Money worries eventually forced him to leave England for Germany, where he practised in Dresden and Berlin, obtaining the position of physician to King Frederick the Great (1740-1786). |
