Description | Born at Long Hermiston, Midlothian, Anderson studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He was company surgeon for the East India Company from 1786 and physician-general in Madras from 1800. Whilst in Madras Anderson attempted to breed an insect resembling the cochineal and also tried to introduce the cultivation of silk. |
