This is a 'console' kit from approximately 1930. It represents an approach to building an integrated drum 'kit' that was to anticipate the modern style of frame-mounted kits by 60 years. It provided the added benefit that the whole assembly could be assembled off stage, and wheeled into position in one go. Over the years this kit has collected various instruments from more modern periods, so we see it in its final form as last used by its owner. The cymbals are typical of the period, providing the characteristic colour and effects of the 1930s dance band. Mostly formerly owned and used by Wally Gurr, a pupil of James Blades. Purchased with assistance from the Government's Local Museums Purchase Fund, 1984 (Blades Collection).
