Minerals Collection

TitleMinerals Collection
DescriptionThis collection contains approximately 30,000 minerals from all over the world. They have been collected over the past 150 years by academics and geologists associated with the University’s Geology Department. Included within it are the minerals from the Currie, Davidson and Brown of Lanfine Collections. Between them these three Scottish collections of minerals provide a unique insight into the rationale behind, and practice of, collection over the most fertile period of the Cockburn Museum’s development. They also include unique minerals found only in Scotland and some that appear unique to these collections. Some were bought from mineral dealers and still have the original labels dating back to the 19th century, and have historical as well as mineralogical value. The collection includes multiple examples and varieties of common minerals, as well as more unusual and rare ones.
