Formed in 2013, the Modern and Contemporary Art Collection of the University addresses two issues identified with the overall collection. Firstly, the lack of contemporary work entirely and also modern works from outside the geographical area of Scotland. Furthermore, ECA Degree Show acquisitions would sit in this collection as the ECA Art Collection is closed. The process of collecting from the ECA Degree Show was revived in 2013 through the ECA Art Collections Purchase Prize, which is awarded annually to students of outstanding quality. In return for the prize, a work(s)by the artist is collected.
The general remit of this collection is to acquire works by artists who have studied or worked at ECA or the University more widely. This includes recent graduates and also alumni. Moreover, the collection seeks to acquire works by artists who have exhibited at the Talbot Rice Gallery. This collection is not limited geographically.
Collection created in 2013 following the merger between The University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh College of Art
