TitlePolish School of Medicine Drawings and Paintings Collection
DescriptionThis collection contains four original paintings, one copy, one reproduction and ten pen and ink drawings. The original paintings are “Panorama of Warsaw -View from Vistula”, painted in 1963, a delightful small oil by Josef Mlynarski; “Collegium Majus”, also by Josef Mlynarski; “Dr Wiktor Tomaszewski as a young man” by an unknown artist and “Country House in North East Poland” by Josef Czajkowski, 1919. The collection contains a copy of “Suleyman the Magnificent consulting Dr Josef Strus 1541”, by A. Oleszczynski, produced in 1832. The copy, an oil on canvas, was painted by Jerzy Winkler, Poznan in 1991. The reproduction, painted by Lucjan Sagan in 1984, is of a work entitled “Flowers from Poland”. The drawings, all by Josef Mlynarski, are of University buildings and medical buildings within Edinburgh, such as the old Royal Infirmary. These were used to illustrate the book ‘Edinburgh University and Poland’ by Dr Wiktor Tomaszewski which was published in 1968 following the 25th anniversary celebrations of the founding of the Polish School of Medicine. Josef Mlynarski was born in 1925. He studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Krakow and in the Institute of Fine Art in Leningrad in the early 1950s. He then took up a post as a lecturer in the Academy of Fine Art in Warsaw. In 1965, with the aid of a Ministry of Culture Scholarship, he studied in Paris. He held a number of ‘one-man’ shows in Warsaw in the late 1950s-mid 1960s. He has exhibited in many centres including Edinburgh, winning prizes and commendations in several countries in the 1960s and 70s. He and his wife also developed an interest in ceramics and produced beautifully painted porcelain pieces, including vases and tea services. Mlynarski died on 27th April 1984. In addition to this set of drawings and paintings, the Polish Collection also has an exquisite hand painted tea service, one of only three of its kind, the other sets being gifts to Mao Tse Tung and General Charles de Gaulle. The Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh holds a set of his etchings entitled ‘Warsaw Uprising 1944’
