| Description | Edinburgh University Archives contain records illuminating all aspects of the university’s history since its foundation in 1582. The Archives include minutes of meetings of the university’s three governing bodies, the University Court, the Senatus Academicus, and the General Council. There are minutes of faculty meetings together with the records of departments, centres, institutes, etc. There are also records of administrative and support services, including the University Library, for which we have archives dating back to 1636. In addition, the University Archives include records for institutions that have merged with the University of Edinburgh, including New College, Edinburgh Dental School, the Royal (Dick) Veterinary School, Moray House Institute of Education, and Edinburgh College of Art. We hold matriculation and graduation records and student class lists going back, for some subjects, to the very earliest days of the university. The University Archives also include examination papers and university publications, including the University Calendar. Alongside the records of the university itself sit those of Edinburgh University Students’ Association and of many clubs, societies, and other organizations associated with the University. Besides written records, the University Archives contain many photographs of staff, students, and university buildings and spaces. Finally, there is a rich collection of objects, including a chloroform bottle belong to James Young Simpson, Professor of Medicine, who first discovered the anaesthetic use of chloroform in an 1847 experiment. |
