DescriptionSmall cello with modern fingerboard and neck, gut strings, and a pseudo-Baroque tailpiece. The varnish is a medium brown, slightly darker on the scroll. The instrument possesses numerous scratches, repaired cracks on front, and woodworm holes on back. Its ribs are longer than the soundboard and back, so that they stick out at the points. The neck is set crookedly on the body of the cello and the button appears to have been repaired. Measurements: Overall size: 1153mm Body length: 681mm Body width, upper bouts: 314mm Body width, upper points (from tip of rib): 301mm Body width, waist: 222mm Body width, lower bouts: 392mm Body width, lower points (from tip of rib): 349mm Body depth: 114mm String length: 672mm Marks other than signature: Inlaid “flower pot” design on front just behind fingerboard, type VIII as categorized by Benjamin Hebbert. This design consists of a tulip-like flower with two tendrils and a “pot” with a triangle and feet. On the front of the lower bouts is a design, likely in ink, of a thistle and its prickly buds flanked by two roses, possibly symbolic of the union between Scotland and England. Back of cello and sides have numerous scratches. |
