DescriptionSet of Highland bagpipes, large three-quarter (or 7/8) size, with original chanter, blowpipe, bass and tenor drones. Ebony with silver and ivory mounts and ferrules, and silver tops.Chanter: original chanter. Seven finger-holes and one thumb-hole. Lapped tenon with ivory bulb. Silver sole. Silver ferrule on stock. Blowpipe/mouthpiece: Original blowpipe and mouthpiece. Lapped tenons. Valve of white plastic. Silver ferrule on stock. Ivory bulb. Ebony blowpipe with turned comb pattern. Silver mouthpiece. Bass Drone: three sections. Ebony with turned comb pattern. Silver top and tenons, the silver tubes descending all the length inside the ivory projecting mounts. Silver and ivory ferrules. Tenor drones: two sections. Silver top and tenons, the silver tubes descending all the length inside the ivory projecting mounts. Silver and ivory ferrulesBag: modern leather bag. Bag cover/cord: red tartan woollen cover with matching cord. Measurements: chanter length 355mm, conical bore beginning at 4.0mm and ending at 18mm; bass drone length c 725mm, bore at top 10mm; tenor drones length c 350mm, bore at top 9.1mm. Signature/Marks: Stamped above first finger-hole and below last finger-hole "MACDOUGALL"; hallmarks located on all silver parts "N" (encased in an oval); "R&HBK" (in rectangle); thistle (in shield); castle (in shield). The thistle and castle motif are used for Scottish silver made in Edinburgh. Repair History: According to the previous owner, the bushings are replacements in blackwood. Replacement bag, cover, and valve. The blowpipe is probably a replacement by Mark Cushing for an earlier owner. |
