Description
Technical description: Bass viol case, pine, covered on the outside with leather, tooled at the edge on the top in imitation of purfling, inside lined with green cloth. Viol-shaped, outside dimensions - overall length 1354mm, lower bout 427mm, lower point 388mm, waist 264mm, upper point 354mm, fold 321mm; inside dimensions - overall length 1315mm, lower bout 403mm, lower point 371mm, waist 236mm, upper point 320mm, fold 305mm, width of neck section 88mm - 69mm, neck section length 363mm, body length 645mm. Two hinges on the treble side, under the leather. Lock on the bass side, and hook and eyes at the head (eye missing) and lower bout (hook missing). Outside depth of case at edge 195mm maximum, raised for the string and fingerboard, depth at highest point 275mm.
Repair History: Conservation treatment of the leather covering grant-aided by the Scottish Museums Council.
Inscriptions: Remains of a label on the top of the case, the only wording that can be read now is "...ewcast...", possibly part of 'Newcastle'.
