According to the firm's archives [instruments books], the instrument was "Eb Bombardon", Model A91, made by Batt in a batch of 4.
Technical description: silver-plated brass; water-keys on 1st v.t.s. and m.t.s.; fitting for music card holder; two loops for sling. Valve type: 4 Périnet valves, bottom sprung; alignment by key on piston. Repair History: Replated by Mayers & Harrison, 1962. The mouthpiece receiver is apparently a subsequent replacement.

Inscribed on bell "Imperial Model / ``SOLBRON'' / (REGISTERED) / CLASS A" / trumpet and banner trademark with "TRADE MARK" and "BOOSEY" / "COMPENSATING PISTONS / BOOSEY & CO. / MAKERS. LONDON / 117705 / British Throughout"; on side of 2nd valve casing "91081" / diamond shaped trademark containing letters "P", "C", "G", "S" and pattern of 13 circles / "TRADE" "MARK"; on valve top caps "PATENT"; on valve top and bottom caps "46", "47", "48", "13".
Decorative features: floral embellishment around inscription on bell.
With fitted hard case, covered in black leathercloth; inscription on golden plastic fabric under lid: "Mayers & Harrison Ltd. / MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MAKERS / GREAT JACKSON STREET / MANCHESTER 15". Case bought in 1962.
Specific usage history: Used in City of Edinburgh Band. Lent to Horniman Museum for "Sound Designs" Exhibition 2006- . |
