Description
Technical description: Brass, cork ring to seal insertion; inner truncated cone opening to free air at narrowest point; outer chamber of flaring bore profile; three brass spacers (cross-section 4.2 × 4.2) between narrow end of outer tube and wide end of inner tube. The dome reflects sound, allowing standing waves within the instrument. The internal cone leads to a small opening at the centre of the dome from which sound radiates.A short extension to the inner tube is soldered to the top of the dome, perforated for wrist-cord.
Repair History: The spacers unsoldered and the two tubes fixed with three nuts and bolts under the cork; the tube probably shortened and the extension probably a later addition.
Overall size: length to rim 192, length to top of dome 216, length overall 228; external diameter of outer tube 37 (minimum), 136 (maximum).
Bore: Internal diameter of inner tube 26 (maximum), 12 (minimum).
