DescriptionThe instrument is opened. The soundboard is made of spruce and it is currently fragmented in several pieces. The back, ribs, head and neck are of sycamore; the fingerboard and endpin are ebony. The ribs show evidence of numerous repairs inside. The varnish is a dark brown colour, almost opaque. There is a pine strip for the soundpost, 100mm wide, 14mm thick. The top and bottom blocks and corner blocks are pine. The neck is lightly figured. Two piece back; the fold is more of a curve rather than a sharp angle. Large dowel from the back into the top block. The instrument originally had machine heads. Measurements: Neck length 435mm; fingerboard length 823mm, width at nut 39.2mm, at bottom 93.5mm. No inscriptions. Original machine heads missing. (Reid Collection). |
