Description
Technical description: Boxwood; [originally 6 sections, including extension to low B on right-hand pipe]; silver keys and 2 cutters; ivory ferrules and studs; left-hand pipe has 6 finger-holes (top one containing ebony plug), and keys for E, D, F, D♯ and C♯; right-hand pipe has 4 finger-holes, and keys for C (thumb, with ebony plug in key-hole), B, F, low B and low C; high D (`new') key and high C key on head section, played by L0 and L1 respectively; [two-part wind-cap].
Keymount type: ring/knob. Keyhead type: 10 flat octagonal; 2 flat round, open-standing (for C♯ and low B).
Stamped with "BAINBRIDGE / INVENTOR / 35 / HOLBORN / HILL / LONDON / [NEW] PATENT"; stamped on each section with note names and numbers by respective finger-holes and with key names by respective keyheads; keys stamped with "WB" and the 1829 London hallmark.
Repair History: Reinforcing band of brass around head section to prevent cracking, probably a later addition and possibly covering a word of the inscription.
Performance characteristics: Not playable in present condition; lowest six-finger note (LH pipe) sounds B♭⁴ (if in E♭) or B⁴ (if in E).
Usable pitch: If in E♭, sounding A⁴ = c 455 Hz (c 60 cents above A⁴ = 440 Hz); if in E, sounding A⁴ = c 430 Hz (c 40 cents below A⁴ = 440 Hz). |
