Description
2 valves.
Technical description: Brass; three-part ball with groove. One crook (brass, single-coil). Valve type: 2 Stölzel valves.
Decorative features: Embossed bell garland; engraved ball; barley twist embellishment on mouthpipe.
Overall size: 457 (not including bell section); bell 118 (missing, estimated from photograph).
Sounding length: overall air column length of crook 248
Bore: at c 40 from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore), 10.9; not expanding in 100mm; distance to valve casing 1070, v.t.s. bore 11.2 m.t.s. bore 11.7.
Dia of mouthpiece receiver: taper on instrument body to receive crooks, bits or mouthpiece 12.3 - 11.6; crook internal taper 12.2 - 11.2, external taper 11.2 - 12.4.
No inscriptions.
Wooden box, not original; covered in leather with incised inscription "J. MAY / ODIHAM / 1774".
Bell section now missing but known from old glass negative at Wombourne (pre 1910). Stay missing between lower mouthpipe and valve upper housing (this fault visible in photograph); stay now also missing between mouthpipe and main tubing just before valve section (this stay was intact in photograph); stay unsoldered between mouthpipe and main tuning slide.
Lent with and possibly formerly used with mouthpiece (3291). Accompanied by printed card fingering chart titled "Scale of the VALVE TRUMPET"; four errors in this have been noted, probably by Eric Halfpenny.
