DescriptionTechnical description: Copper shell; sides perforated by four pairs of groups of four 5mm dia holes instead of a release hole in the base of the shell; ferrous metal reinforcing frame inside; attachments to outside of bowl for harness or a belt running around the drum; a ferrous attachment with a hanging ring of diameter 25 fitted at one point towards the foot of the drum; wire tripod legs. Tuning knob on side at end of a wooden shaft with single screw thread inside the bowl; two wooden cross-pieces mounted on screwed rod, the further from the knob threaded, the nearer free to turn; each end of both cross-pieces fitted with a pulley; the thrust bearing fitted to the end of the screwed rod has ferrous metal plates at either side with a brass roller bearing with three brass rollers; eight laterally-mounted pulley wheels in frames in the bowl with tangential axles; four circumferential external pulleys with radial axles mounted on exterior of bowl; at each of the eight tensioning points there is a hook which is attached to the outside of the flesh hoop and passes through the skin, with loosely mounted pulley on each hook. Stamped on side of shell "GOLD MEDAL / PARIS 1878" / six-pointed star / "C. MAHILLON & Co. / LONDON / MADE AT THEIR / BRUSSELS / WORKS" / six-pointed star. |
