DescriptionTechnical description: Rosewood with german silver keys, socket and reed-well linings, tenon tips and bell rim. Simple acting octave keys. Only the R1 B♭ and C keys are levers. The L2 ring and the L1 pierced-plate are linked by an axle on the left side of the instrument, they are connected to a hole between L1 and L2 which is closed by either or both of these touches, this enables a forked C to be played (with just L2 plus some right hand fingers to `focus' the tone) while still keeping the open C♯ in tune. The low C key lowers the R2 and 3 rings and closes the brille. There is no forked F vent. System: simple L0: 8.1. L1: PP; 8.2. L2: R; Dtr. L3: T. L4: G♯; low B; E♭-dup. R0: sup. R1: T; B♭; C. R2: R. R3: R; F. R4: low C; C♯; E♭. Keymount type: pillars. Keyhead type: cups. Signature/Marks: Stamped on upper section with crown motif / "RUDALL / CARTE & CO LTD / 23 BERNERS STREET / OXFORD STREET / LONDON / 1024". On low section and bell with crown motif / "RUDALL / CARTE & CO LTD / LONDON". According to the firm’s archives (stock books), the instrument was “Rosewood to B (natural) no thumbplate” made by Chapelain. It has its original leather case. Repair History: The low B/E♭-dup butterfly touchpiece has broken off and been resoldered. |
